Alkalis form alkaline solutions in water. Alkalis are sources of hydroxide ions, OH-. For example, sodium hydroxide produces hydroxide ions:
NaOH(aq) → Na+(aq) + OH-(aq)
Alkaline solutions have pH values greater than 7.
