A solution is prepared by adding a solute (which is usually a solid that is soluble) in a solvent
(example for a solvent is  water )

An example for that when you prepare a salt solution , the solid you dissolve is the salt (is the solute ) and the solvent is water .

Other solvents are less common like ethanol , toluene, chloroform, acetone ,etc.
